Infrastructure, Transport and Land Use Economics
Efficient infrastructure is important for good outcomes for any economy. The CIE has provided expert advice on infrastructure issues for over 30 years. Our work has included advice on infrastructure investment decisions, regulation and pricing using techniques such as cost benefit analysis and economic modelling.
We advise across sectors including:
Transport infrastructure, ranging from urban public transport to regional and freight transport.
Water, gas and electricity infrastructure.
Communications, including internet and telecommunications infrastructure.
Social infrastructure, including health, social housing and green and blue infrastructure.
The wide range of our work means we are well placed to advise on complex issues involving infrastructure and non-infrastructure options to address a wide range of issues. The CIE has developed a suite of sector-specific models which are available for analysis.
Land use outcomes are closely related to infrastructure and transport accessibility – these are often the defining characteristics of places. The CIE has previously provided rigorous quantitative economic research and policy advice, for infrastructure planning, development and evaluation agencies in both the public and private sectors. Our experience includes:
identifying planning and infrastructure constraints, their underlying causes and providing evidenced-based solutions to overcome them
advising all levels of government on developing programs and initiatives to support urban development and productivity, including understanding the nexus between infrastructure and city design
estimating the cost and benefits of large-scale infrastructure projects and advising on development feasibility, and
developing regulatory and funding frameworks relevant to the transport, water, energy, and waste sectors and their impact on affordable housing supply.
