Derek has over 30 years experience in the analysing and forecasting commodity markets, providing advice on the impacts of trade and industry policy and facilitating strategic planning and program evaluation. He specialises in agriculture, and downstream processing industries, and market access. Recently his experience encompasses the quantification of economic costs and benefits of participating in markets that target reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity objectives.
He is heavily involved in the development and application of specialised economic models that underpin these forecasting and policy applications. These include the development and use of economywide models— such as the Australian state-based CIE regions and the international GTAP models — and customised commodity and trade models. Is responsible for the development, maintenance and use of the Global Meat Industries and Integrated Framework(GMI-IF) model of meat production, consumption and bilateral trade across 22 countries and regions for Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). Has also developed a range of market specific models for grains, sugar, dairy and horticulture both for Australia and for a number of developing countries.
Derek combines these technical skills with practical experience in assisting industries and government with analysis that range from tax, trade and industry policy through to the evaluation of the economic impacts of R&D, investment priorities and portfolio balance.
