A blast from the past

Some 32 years ago, the CIE produced a fun booklet running through all the reasons why tariffs, and protection in general, are not a good policy idea. At the time, while the arguments against tariffs were well understood, there were some calls to increase protection again. We offered the booklet at the time as a way to stimulate thinking in an easily understood framework. This booklet was for many years popular in a number of high school and university courses.

32 years ago, publishing was very different to today, and a lot of the graphics now look very quaint. But the ideas remain sound, and as it turns out, highly relevant in the current era. We offer it again as a bit of fun and with the possibility that it may also stimulate some thinking and discussion.
