Climate Change and Adaptation

The CIE commenced its climate change program in 1992 following the famous Rio Earth Summit, and since then we have continued to provide comprehensive advice and analysis to a very wide variety of clients: government, business and international agencies. We have actively engaged in four iterations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports, and have been involved in literally dozens of Australian Government inquiries, policy development and analysis.

Our model based work of climate policies commenced in 1994 with a comprehensive analysis of the economic effects of reducing climate emissions. Since then we have continued to develop and enhance our climate change models, providing quantitative analysis and climate change advice that is timely and comprehensive.

Our client value our understanding of the rapidly evolving climate economics literature and our ability to choose from a range of analytical techniques to assist in decision making.

We continue to provide detailed analyses and critiques of a variety of policy proposals — including emissions trading, carbon taxes, white ‘efficiency’ certificates, forestry offsets and clean development mechanism credits. We also provide regular forecasts of agricultural emissions and are regularly called on to advise on the implications of particular policy settings — for Australian and overseas governments and for business.

We provide regular briefings to industry groups, covering the nature, challenges and opportunities posed by emerging climate policies such as emissions trading.

We also have a strong interest in analysing effective approaches to adaptation. In this area, we have been particularly involved in advising a variety of agricultural and water interests about the threat and opportunities of climate change.
