Dr Sandy Cuthbertson
On 5 January 2009, our extraordinary friend, colleague, mentor and founding partner, Dr Sandy Cuthbertson, died.
Sandy was a remarkable individual, whose passion, love of economics and ability to communicate with a wide variety of people has left an indelible mark on everyone at TheCIE. Indeed, without his energy and hard work, TheCIE would not be in existence at all.
Sandy will be greatly missed by us all. We know that he was very proud of TheCIE and the work he was involved in over many years. For our part, we will continue to uphold Sandy’s principles and to keep in practice all the many things he taught us.
Over time, we plan to establish a permanent record of Sandy’s achievements, so visit this site again for updates.
Dr Sandy Cuthbertson was a Senior Consultant with TheCIE from 2002 to 2008. He was a founding Director, and Managing Director of TheCIE from its establishment in 1986 until the end of 2001. He was previously a senior official at the Industry Commission (now Productivity Commission). He had an Honours Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of New England and a PhD in Economics from North Carolina State University. Sandy’s fields of expertise included trade and industry policy, competition policy and regulatory reform. Throughout his career, he worked in over 20 countries and completed a large number of assignments across a wide range of issues, both in Australia and overseas.
Sandy was a superb economist, but he excelled at finding unique and engaging ways of communicating economic ideas to a wide range of audiences.
